I think an even better rapper is a master not only of words and language, but of syllables and alliteration. Tom P has all of those things. His flow is hard to match and unique, switching between really fast, syllable focused alliteration and an old school flow with a concentration on rhyming words. His demeanor is flawless. In the tradition of Bone Thugs he spits rapid rhymes but always manages to bring it back to what only he can describe best…”old school, new school cross-pollination…”
Tom P. is clever enough to have his self promotion take a back, but just prominent enough seat to his particular take on rhyming. That’s something that I can respect and get behind. He stays true to his roots throughout the album and never strays far from his message of self introspection and promotion of his good times, bad times lifestyle, filled with all the rapper glory of drinking, smoking and fucking a lot…and all the rapper adversities of paranoia, danger and regret. Don’t let that take away from his originality, however. He has a clever take on rap and I think Tom P is headed places. His subjects are sharp and full of wit as he touches on topics such as lost love, picking friends before girlfriends and my favorite….the complexity and dual identity of being in pursuit of a dream (in his case, being a famous rapper) and having to get there by waiting tables or working the dreaded “day job.”

Tom P performing at the Fox Theatre! Check out the video
This performance was truly an honor to get to do. The Fox Theatre is one of the most famous venues in Atlanta. It is by all means not a rap venue. For the most part it has plays and shit, like Phantom of the Opera or whatever. The stage is huge and the seating area is massive as well. For this performance, the upper seating was closed off so it was just a massive floor space for fans to dance on or watch the live performances. Gorilla Zoe was the headlining act of the night and we opened. There was also some jackass from MTV there yelling on a microphone incoherent nonsense throughout the evening (even a couple times while we were performing.) I kind of wanted to punch him in the face but I refrained. Anyway, we got some footage of the night. It's not the best, but at least it exists, which is becoming my inner narrative while putting this blog of my history together.

We headlined a show in East Atlanta at a small club called "TNS" place was sold out, got some decent footage of it. The show was on Friday the 13th and I remember it snowed that day. Pretty shitty day to snow when you have a show you're supposed to headline. The people showed up though, it was a packed house and a fun night, despite the weather. Tom P opens for Nappy Roots at "Star Bar" in Atlanta for a sold out crowd. Other acts who performed that night opening for Tom P included Yelawolf and Aleon Craft. Tom P performed his new song "Spot Light" as a grand finale with a live band and was the only performer of the night to get an encore.

ALL A'S: The crowd was on that crunk juice Friday night at the Star Bar.
UPDATE: SMKA, Fadia Kader and Esperanza hope to recreate the magic of last week's release party at SXSW this year by throwing a free Atlanta showcase involving many of the same artists who performed at the Star Bar on Jan. 22. They're currently seeking partnerships with Atlanta businesses, brands and/or personalities interested in collaborating to pull it off a show that's not intended for them to make profit but to put the spotlight on the local scene. There will be two shows here in Atlanta, March 5 and 12, to raise funds for the SXSW show scheduled to take place Thurs, Mar. 18 at the Light Bar in downtown Austin, Tex. Hate to sound like a hype man, especially since CL was "co-hosting" SMKA's mixtape compilation release, but even I was surprised when I got to The 808 Experiment: Vol. 2 release party last Friday night after the start time to see a line snaking outside the Star Bar onto Moreland Ave. Inside, the place was vibrating with the kind of energy I haven't felt at a local scene hip-hop show since...dare I say, ever. If you missed the show, you missed an insane amount of underground Atlanta all-stars under one roof. A cat like Tom P could have easily packed out the place by himself with the rabid Decatur fanbase he's built. The same could be said for Yelawolf, Hollyweerd, Rahbi, Gripplyaz and a host of others who were on the bill that night. But the success of that show proved there's strength in numbers.
The best performance of the night came from ALeon Craft, who gave the crowd a snippet of"Botanicals," his song on Vol. 2, while firing up a skinny blunt onstage. Before the song was halfway through, he had DJ Sol Messiah cut the track and asked the crowd if they wanted to hear some new shit. The track Messiah proceeded to play was such a dookie funked-out groove that it felt like we were entering an alternate dimension with ALeon as some extraterrestrial Clintonian (George, not Bill) tour guide.
